The University of Iowa received an anonymous email on April 10, 2020, outlining accusations against School of Music Professor John Muriello. The university promptly shared the email with law enforcement.

The Iowa City Police Department is leading the criminal investigation, so specific questions about the investigation should be directed to the Iowa City Police Department.

While individuals must be afforded due process, the university in consultation with the investigating agency, can and does take interim steps to ensure the safety our campus community.

A search warrant was served at Mr. Muriello’s home on May 28, 2021, and the university placed Mr. Muriello on leave at that time.

Mr. Muriello subsequently retired July 1, 2022. Per university policy, emeritus status is automatic when a faculty member retires after serving for a significant period of time. However, the university may revoke emeritus status, at any time for good cause. Conviction of a federal crime would be considered good cause.
