Message to all FSL chapter presidents from the Panhellenic president and vice president for student life

Dear Chapter Presidents,

On Saturday, October 5, a member of the Panhellenic community made a comment including racist ideology on an Instagram post, which we do not condone at the University of Iowa. We are writing to emphasize the comment made by this individual was unacceptable, and the Panhellenic Community does not stand for this.

This letter is being sent to all chapter presidents because we want you to communicate with your chapter members first. We recognize you, as the leaders of your chapters, know the best way to communicate with your members. We are calling on you to deliver a strong message of the values Fraternity and Sorority Life hold, and to emphasize the action taken does not align with the tenants by which we strive to live.

We will be following up this evening with a message to members of the Fraternity and Sorority Life Community.

Questions and concerns can be directed to uiowafsl@uiowa.edu.

Sincerely,

Elah Shulruff, Panhellenic President
Melissa Shivers, Vice President for Student Life

Message to all FSL community members from the Panhellenic Council

On Saturday, October 5, a member of the University of Iowa Panhellenic community made a comment that included racist ideology on an Instagram post. The Panhellenic Council will not stand for nor tolerate these unacceptable comments. We are taking immediate action to ensure this situation is addressed.

The Panhellenic Council strives to be inclusive and accepting of all members and identities, and we recognize comments of this nature do not align with our values. We hold our Panhellenic members to the highest standards, and the comments made do not reflect our values in any way.

As a Council, we will be assessing how to better educate our women on the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within our Panhellenic community. This action has forced us to re-examine how we address these issues and how to prevent these intolerable situations from happening in the future.
